Earth Written by Sara So Far
On the bank of this here river
Where the old man strolls
And on the surface of the water
Where his laugh still rolls
See the ripples in the water
See the wrinkles on his face
Last year he counted lilies
And now he counts the days
The old days ran away
With the current of today
Walk on old man, don’t count your steps
Walk on for the sake of time
Walk on old man, don’t look behind
The past will sustain itself just fine
Now take my young gaze and turn it around
Help me to face my tomorrow
Whisper courage in my ear
And how to save this earth we borrow
I was looking for a story
I was hungry for a song
And I dug deep into the flair
Of my days so bright and young
But I need the weight of history
For my decades are still few
Let me drink from this your river
The rugged wisdom that is you
My future flows away
With the current of today
Walk on old man, don’t count your steps
Walk on for the sake of time
Walk on old man, don’t look behind
The past will sustain itself just fine
Now take my young gaze and turn it around
Help me to face my tomorrow
Whisper courage in my ear
And how to save this earth we borrow
Teach me how to grow with nature
Teach me how to write a song
Teach me how to count my blessings
And to let life make me strong
Teach me how to tell a story
That can stand the test of time
To be humbled by the mountains
And still cherish what is mine
What am I to say
What am I to pray
Tell the ocean that we’re sorry
Tell its creatures to hold on
Tell the stained air that we breathe
That we recognize our wrong
Take the soil you worked in your day
And plough it with your stories
Sow my tears deep into the ground
Tell me we can still turn it all around
Hand me the tools to build a bridge
Between today and forever
Show me where we’ve tied ourselves
To habits we should sever
Tell the creatures of the land
That you fed with your own hand
That for their loss I will not stand
Now give me knowledge, give me courage
Courage
So I bathe me in the ocean
I surrender to its waves
Wash the guilt of generations
Off my skin
May its white salt purify us
Its greatest mysteries never found
May its chill wake us from slumber
Turn around
